Why Italians Are Good at Learning Languages

Hand gestures and body language are some techniques Italians use to communicate
Having lived in Italy for many years, many people have told me that we at British Community have a lot of work to do due to the fact that Italians are so poor at speaking English. While we can always improve skills such as listening comprehension, fluency or pronunciation for example, I would certainly not say that Italians, specifically, are bad at speaking English.

Based on my personal experience, having taught English as a second language (ESL) predominantly in Italy over the last 12 years, I actually believe that Italians are extremely good communicators, both when conversing with foreigners or tourists in Italy and whilst travelling abroad. Here are 3 reasons why:

1. Confidence

I have found Italians to be very confident when speaking a second language, no matter their level of ability. Perhaps this is based on their latin linguistic roots that allows to understand and converse with other European languages, helping to comprehend and get their message across, often using words that are similar in Italian or commercially popular. Both support an increase in confidence and leads to a lack of fear of making mistakes, which is often an obstacle for many language students.

Tip: Don’t fear mistakes; make them and learn from them.

2. Social

Have you ever heard of a quiet, introvert Italian? I haven’t. Italians are very social creatures and use delicious food and quality wine as an excuse to unite and gather with friends and family. This openness is the backbone of language learning and communication; if you are not willing to practice and speak, you won’t make progress and Italians certainly don’t have this problem!

Tip: If you are introvert, take small steps to talk to different people to increase your self-esteem and learn from others.

3. Body language

For many Brits or foreigners living in Italy, watching conversations in the street is sometimes like going to the theatre, but even more dramatic. Italians are famous for their ‘passionate’ expressionism, using hands, arms and face, all to communicate how they truly feel. There is no room for misinterpretation here; if an Italian doesn’t know an English word, they simply, mime, gesture, shout or in the case of directions, literally take you under-arm and walk you to your destination! If it can’t be said, it can be demonstrated.

Tip: For the purpose of real-life communication and interaction, use any means necessary, while being considerate of the local cultures and any gestures that could be negatively interpreted.

These are my reasons why Italians are effective language learners and communicators, including English, despite not being a Latin-based language. It doesn’t always have to be perfect, it just has to work. Bravo, ragazzi!
